Brand Strategy & Positioning
Find the position competitors can't take from you.
Brand strategy decides what a business should stand for, who it is for and why it should be chosen. We define that position before any design work begins, so every later decision has something solid to answer to.
The problem
Most businesses describe themselves with the same claims as their competitors: quality, trust, innovation, service. The words are true, but they are not distinctive, so customers fall back on price or familiarity.
The cost shows up later. Design briefs drift, messaging changes with every campaign, and teams spend time debating taste because there is no agreed position to test ideas against.
How we approach it
Start with the business, not the logo
We look at commercial goals, customers and competitors before discussing visual direction. The brief you bring is the starting point. The real problem is often one level deeper.
Choose ground you can own
A useful position is one competitors cannot easily claim and your business can genuinely deliver. We pressure-test every option against both.
Make it usable
Strategy only works when people can apply it. We turn the position into clear principles, messaging and priorities that guide design, product and communication decisions.
Process
- 01
Discover
Conversations with leadership, a review of existing materials, and a close look at customers and the competitive landscape.
- 02
Define
Positioning options developed and tested against the business, the audience and the market.
- 03
Articulate
The chosen position written up as a brand platform, architecture and messaging framework.
- 04
Apply
Creative direction showing how the strategy carries into identity, digital and communication work.
What it can include
Every engagement is scoped to the business. Deliverables may include:
- Research and competitor review
- Audience definition
- Brand positioning
- Brand architecture
- Messaging framework
- Brand platform: purpose, values and personality
- Creative direction
What to expect
A defined scope
Objectives, deliverables and timeline are agreed after an initial discovery conversation, before any work begins.
Shared working sessions
You review the thinking at each stage, so the final position reflects your knowledge of the business as well as ours.
A strategy your team can use
The outcome is documented clearly enough for your team, and any future partners, to apply it consistently.
Common questions
- Do we need brand strategy if we only need a new logo?
- Often, yes. A logo has to express something specific. If your position is already clear, the strategic phase can be light. If it isn't, a short strategy phase prevents an expensive redesign later.
- Can strategy be a standalone engagement?
- Yes. Some clients take the strategy forward with their own team. Others continue into identity, digital or communication work with us.
- How long does it take?
- It depends on the size of the business and how much research is needed. We confirm the timeline in the proposal, after the discovery conversation.
